September is REALTOR® Safety Month. As you know, protecting yourself goes beyond vigilance in the field. You also need to be aware of the opportunities to improve your safety at the office and in the digital world.
NAR has worked hard to provide resources and tips on the topic of safety. A few quick links to safety hot topics are below:
Here at your local association, member safety will always be a top priority. As of now, we have two safety-related dates in September you may find beneficial.
On Monday, September 23rd, 2019 from 9am – 1pm, we’ll have our first REALTOR® Concealed Weapon Training class. PLEASE view the details on our calendar regarding eligibility and requirements. This class will be instructed by Keith Hardesty, an honorably discharged US Air Force Veteran, former Atlanta City Police Officer/investigator, and retired Federal Supervisory Criminal Investigator (ATF) with 20 years of Law Enforcement Firearm Instructor’s experience.
Of course, safety is a year-round priority! On Monday, October 28th we have “Tech Management & Safety” from 1pm – 4pm at PRO. Presented by Craig Grant, the “Real Estate Tech Guru”, this class aims to keep you up-to-date with NAR, Federal, and State technology policies, copyright risks, email etiquitee, keeping your computer safe, and more.
Did you know? If you’re ever feeling in danger in the field, Supra’s new eKEY app feature lets you send for help with just a tap of a button.
Please don’t forget to set this up! Watch the video to see how.

The Pinellas Realtor Organization (PRO) supported candidate, Realtor Brandi Gabbard has won a seat on the St. Petersburg City Council, defeating Barclay Harless 61 percent to 39 percent. Gabbard is now the fifth woman on the council, joining Darden Rice, Amy Foster, Lisa Wheeler-Bowman and newcomer Gina Driscoll. We are proud and honored to count Gabbard as an active and involved member at PRO. PRO also supported an extension of the Penny for Pinellas one-cent infrastructure sales tax, which Pinellas county voters also approved, 83 percent to 17 percent. PRO, through the REALTOR® Party, is a powerful alliance of REALTORS® and REALTOR® Associations working to protect and promote homeownership and property investment. The REALTOR® Party speaks with one voice to advance candidates and public policies that build strong communities and promote a vibrant business environment.

We’ve watched firsthand and are hearing stories of the heroism and strength of our communities. The hurricane recovery will be a statewide effort and Florida Realtors® is working hand in hand with the Emergency Operations Center and REALTOR® association partners to ensure that we can disseminate information to our members and help those hit hardest in the wake of the storm. The destruction in the keys is extensive and we’re praying for the safe return for many as entrance to the keys is restricted to emergency personnel and residents only. In Marco Island and Naples the storms reeked further havoc, the stories of REALTORS® like DVP Mike Hughes being helped by their fellow REALTORS® and neighbors removing trees that barricaded the way out from their home are heart-wrenching, and all too familiar to each of our communities at this time. In one last glancing blow, Hurricane Irma flooded the streets and communities in Jacksonville, Past President Russell Grooms and founding member of the Disaster Relief Fund narrowly escaped the flooding of his home. Sadly, many neighbors and entire communities of Floridians did experience flooding and will need our help in the coming weeks.
2017 Florida Realtors® President Maria Wells:
“In the wake of Hurricane Irma, which has hit our state hard and devastated so many communities, we know many of you are feeling the impact. You’re working to get your homes and businesses repaired. You’re helping your neighbors. You’re joining forces with others to offer food, shelter, repairs and meet the critical needs to keep your communities going strong. Lending a helping hand is what friends and neighbors do – it’s what Realtors do. When we all come together offering comfort and hope, it makes getting through tough times like this a little easier. We are so thankful to be here, working together to rebuild our communities and our state.”
